UAE Schools Strengthen Fight Against Vaping with Zero-Tolerance Campaign

Vaping among young people has become a growing global health concern, prompting the UAE’s largest school network, GEMS Education, to take a firm stand against this dangerous trend. On Monday, GEMS launched a zero-tolerance anti-vaping campaign across its schools, combining education, technology, and enforcement measures to ensure a safe learning environment.

Strict Measures to Combat Vaping

The campaign introduces random bag checks, vaping detection sensors, and enhanced educational programs aimed at informing students about the dangers of vaping and nicotine addiction. These measures reflect GEMS Education’s commitment to ensuring that students remain healthy, informed, and protected from harmful substances.

Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating:

"Vaping is one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today. We refuse to stand by and let this dangerous trend take hold in our schools."

She further highlighted that students caught with vapes will face serious consequences, alongside counseling sessions to help them quit.

Advanced Technology to Detect Vaping

A major highlight of this initiative is the installation of state-of-the-art vaping detection sensors in schools, including the upcoming GEMS School of Research and Innovation, set to open in August 2025.

These tamper-resistant sensors can precisely detect vaping activity and send real-time alerts to school administrators. The sensors also have an audio feature that can identify key words like "help", ensuring that students in distress receive timely assistance.

Raising Awareness and Offering Support

Beyond detection and enforcement, GEMS is focusing on education and prevention by integrating anti-vaping lessons into the curriculum. Schools are also working closely with health professionals to support students struggling with nicotine addiction.

Parents are being actively involved in this initiative, ensuring a collaborative effort between schools and families to keep students safe.
