There are approximately 16.5 million students in Iran’s school system — and a recent government report placed around 43% of them as suffering from some form of depression (19% mild, 30% moderate, 16% severe).
In late October 2025, the Iranian Interior Ministry announced that about 280,000 foreign pupils (mostly Afghan) have left Iran, and enrolment for the new year stood at around 320,000, versus double that last year.
The “three-language formula” is practiced in many Iranian regional schools as well, with emphasis on Persian, English and a third local or minority language, reflecting a diverse linguistic heritage.

Online education for returning Afghan students has been offered by Iran’s Ministry of Interior as of October 29, 2025, signalling growing openness to hybrid digital-learning initiatives.
